Songwriter Music Biography
At age 19, Thornton Cline’s conducting and composing skills were portrayed by the Richmond Times Dispatch as a “masterly debut”. The review was referring to Cline’s premiere of his orchestral work, “Onemo” at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D. C. At age 24, Cline was described by the Richmond News Leader as “one of the brightest young stars to have graduated from the Richmond Symphony Youth Orchestra” when he was appointed research assistant to the Pulitzer Prize winning American composer, Dr. Howard Hanson for the Institute of American Music at Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N. Y.
When Cline started making up tunes on the piano at age 5, he never dreamed that he would one day receive a gold and platinum award for a recording of his song “Love Is The Reason” by Engelbert Humperdinck and “I Will Survive” pop diva-Gloria Gaynor, a #1 album on the Billboard Pop Charts in Germany for “Love Is The Reason”, ASCAP Pop Awards, “Songwriter of the Year” awards for 1987 and 1988 from the Tennessee Songwriter’s Association, 2 Dove Award nominations for his Christian tunes, songs in films such as the Alfred Hitchcock film, “Notorious”, television performances of his songs on The Phil Donohue Show (NBC-TV), The Rick Dees Show (ABC-TV), Music City Tonight (TNN), making it on the Grammy Nomination list for Country Song of the Year in 2002, and having his songs recorded by over 150 major and independent recording artists!
But, the Richmond, Virginia boy continued to pursue his dreams. He graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University in music and received his graduate degree in music (minoring in composition) from The University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana. Cline continued his musical studies in violin, piano and composition at The Eastman School of Music (recently ranked the #1 music school in the United States by U. S. News and World Reports”.
Shortly after his musical studies ended in 1979, Cline started getting his musical compositions published into print music by some of the leading educational music publishers-Music 70 (Lawson-Gould Music Publishers in N. Y., Alfred Music Publishers in (Los Angeles), and Bourne Music Publishers in New York.
After teaching music at Washington Senior High School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Thornton Cline moved to Nashville in 1982 to pursue a career in songwriting. He continued to sharpen his writing skills while performing and recording with violin/fiddle and piano. Cline performed violin/fiddle at Opryland USA for such shows as “Sing Tennessee” and “Music, Music, Music” with Brenda Lee.
Since his move in 1982, Cline has had over 150 of his songs recorded by major and independent recording artists including Engelbert Humperdinck, Gloria Gaynor, The Manhattans, Ray Peterson, Mylecka, Billy and Sarah Gaines, Tim Murphy, Tammy Trent, and Mark Chestnut.
In 1997, Thornton Cline signed a 5 year staff writing deal with Gatlin Brothers Music (a co-publishing venture with It’s A Good Thing Publishing). Cline wrote, produced and demoed well over 300 of his songs for Gatlin Brothers Music/It’s A Good Thing up until January 2003. Cline produced Todd Taylor’s album, “Fast Ride” with executive producer, James Taylor, and produced some demos/masters for Johnny Slate at API Productions as well as other productions. Since, 1980, Cline has written over 800 songs.
Thornton Cline is happily married to his wife, Audrey of 20 years. He lives with his wife and two children in Hendersonville, Tennessee.
